British Airways has announced it is to introduce a series of improvements to in flight catering in World Traveller economy and Club World business class.

The improvements to World Traveller include an improved main meal tray with a better starter. Cheese and biscuits will also be added on most outbound flights from London Heathrow and London Gatwick (except flights to India, Japan and Korea).

On longer day flights from London Heathrow to destinations such as Bangkok, Chengdu, Tokyo Haneda and Narita, Seoul, Beijing and Shanghai more “tuck” snack boxes will be available to passengers in the galley mid-flight.

Ice creams will also be offered mid-flight on flights from London Heathrow to Tokyo Haneda, Narita, and Seoul (these are currently available in the inbound flight to London Heathrow).

In Club World, more chocolate items will be added to the “Club Kitchen” on longer flights from London Heathrow and Gatwick.

In the grand scheme of things, the improvements are modest. However, they mark an end to recent cuts to the in flight product (such as the removal of sparkling wine from World Traveller bars).

BA does have a habit of investing in the in flight product, only to then make cuts later, so we hope these improvements are permanent. BA does also promise that more improvements will be forthcoming.

Separately, BA has announced the introduction of paid-for meals in World Traveller.   United Airlines has also announced the re-introduction of complimentary beer and wine in long-haul economy.
