Some positive signs of a real turnaround and expansion at Iberia.

The airline is to reinstate flights between Madrid and Havana in Cuba from 1 June 2015. Flights will operate five weekly, on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sundays.

Iberia will also add Cali and Medellin in Colombia to its route network from 3 July 2015.

This will operate as a “triangular” route, whereby Iberia will fly Madrid – Medellin, Medellin – Cali, and Cali -Madrid. Flights operate three times weekly on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

Here’s the launch timetable from Iberia:

Flight IB6621 Depart Madrid 16:40 – Arrive Havana 20:35
Flight IB6620 Depart Havana 22:15 – Arrive Madrid 13:10

Flight IB6589 Depart Madrid 12:30 – Arrive Medellin 16:25
Flight IB6589 Depart Medellin 17:50 – Arrive Cali 18:55
Flight IB6588 Depart Cali 20:20 – Arrive 13:25

(Timetable is indicative and may vary by season.)

Connections to Madrid are available on BA and Iberia services from London Heathrow and Iberia Express services from London Gatwick.

Whilst we’re sure the timing is coincidental, when Iberia’s parent company International Airlines Group is facing political and media scrutiny over its bid for Aer Lingus, it can point to Iberia’s recent expansion as evidence that it does invest in airlines for growth. We have commented on previously on IAG’s turnaround of Iberia.

Havana is served directly from London Gatwick by Virgin Atlantic. Air Europa and Air France fly to Havana from Madrid and Paris Charles de Gaulle respectively.

Avianca and KLM also fly to Cali from Madrid and Amsterdam respectively. Avianca also flies to Medellin from Madrid.
