Virgin Atlantic has launched a new codeshare partnership with LATAM Airlines.

Virgin Atlantic has placed its code on LATAM flights between London Heathrow and Sao Paulo.

Virgin Atlantic passengers will also be able to connect to 12 destinations in Brazil. These are Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Curitiba, Goiania, Recife, Salvador, Florianopolis, Fortaleza, Vitoria and Londrina.

LATAM flies to Sao Paulo from London Heathrow Terminal 3, with flights operated by Boeing 777-300 aircraft. Note LATAM does not offer a premium economy cabin on this route.

A partnership between LATAM and Virgin Atlantic was expected. Virgin’s 49% shareholder Delta Airlines swooped LATAM out of the Oneworld alliance in 2019. This was after LATAM failed to secure regulatory approval to operate joint businesses with Oneworld alliance members American Airlines, BA and Iberia.

Virgin Atlantic also planned to launch its own route to Sao Paulo in 2020, which was cancelled due to COVID-19. Many years ago, Rio de Janeiro was touted by Virgin a possible route for the Boeing 787-9 aircraft.

It is likely that, subject to regulatory approval, the codeshare partnership will be extended to cover many other routes in South America.

Codeshare flights are currently on sale at Virgin Atlantic.
