CityJet is to suspend its routes from London City to Nantes and Paris Orly permanently from Sunday 27 March 2017.

CityJet currently flies to Paris Orly and Nantes up to four times daily/weekly respectively.

The airline has scaled back signficantly at London City in recent years. It was once the dominant airline at the airport but has lost out as BA has grown through organic growth with its new fleet of Embraer aircraft and Flybe and KLM have entered the airport.

CityJet will continue to fly to Amsterdam, Antwerp, Dublin, Florence and Rotterdam year round. It will also fly on a summer seasonal basis to Avignon (from 19 May 2017 to 8 September 2017) and Toulon (from 8 April 2017 to 26 October 2017).

CityJet was the only airline to fly to Nantes and Paris Orly from London City. BA operates a summer seasonal service to Nantes from London Heathrow. easyJet also flies to Nantes from London Gatwick. BA flies year round to Paris Orly and transferred the route from Heathrow to London City.

Affected passengers with bookings after 27 March 2017 on these routes should contact either CityJet or their travel agent.

Dutch airline KLM is to return to London City airport from Monday 6 February 2017 with direct flights to Amsterdam Schipol airport.

Flights with initially operate once a day on weekdays from Monday 6 February 2017. The schedule will progressively increase to four times a day on weekdays with daily flights on Saturdays and twice daily on Sundays from 28 March 2017.

A four times daily schedule will clearly allow for ample connections to and from KLM’s extensive international network at Amsterdam Schipol.

Flights will be operated by KLM CityHopper using 100 seat Embraer E-190 aircraft, which should afford good leg room.

Flights are on sale now at klm.com

The London City – Amsterdam route is currently served by both CityJet and BA CityFlyer so passengers will have an extensive schedule of flights to choose from in 2017.

KLM currently serves London City from Amsterdam via a codeshare arrangement with CityJet and it is assumed this will discontinue after KLM launches its own flights.

The Severn Tunnel, which the Great Western Railway operates through between London Paddington and South Wales, is to close for six weeks from Monday 12 September 2016 and Friday 21 October 2016.

As a consequence of the closure trains will be diverted and journey times from London Paddington to South Wales will increase by up to 40 minutes.

In response, Flybe has launched a temporary service between London City airport and Cardiff airport from 12 September 2016 to 21 October 2016.

Flights will operate up to four times daily on weekdays and twice daily on Saturdays and Sundays. Flights will be operated by VLM Airlines on behalf of Flybe.

This is not the first scheduled passenger service between London City and Cardiff. Air Wales operated a short-lived service between London City, Cardiff and Swansea airports in 2006.

British Airways is to fly to Berlin Tegel airport from London City and London Stansted airports from Sunday 19 June 2016.

Flights to Berlin from London City will operate up to 3x daily all year round. From London Stansted, flights will operate once-weekly at weekends for the summer season.

Flights will be operated using Embraer E-190 aircraft and BA will offer a two class Club Europe business class and EuroTraveller economy service.

Berlin is the fifth seasonal destination for BA at London Stansted, after it launched seasonal flights to Faro, Ibiza, Malaga and Palma de Mallorca.

The timings below are not particularly useful for anyone in the UK flying from Stansted looking to spend a weekend in Berlin. We can only surmise that the main benefit is positioning an aircraft at Stansted to operate BA’s other weekend flights from the airport.

London City receives planning permission to increase flight capacity

London City airport has received planning permission from Newham Council to make investments in its infrastructure to expand capacity at the airport.

London City airport say that additional runway capacity will enable larger aircraft to operate from the airport and enable the number of flights at the airport to increase from 70,000 to 110,000 (a cap imposed by Newham Council).

The development originally proposed by the airport included adding seven aircraft parking stands, extending the terminal building and building a new eastern passenger pier and a new passenger forecourt in front of the terminal building.

British Airways is to suspend its thrice-daily service from London Heathrow to Rotterdam from 28 March 2015.

BA has served Rotterdam since late 2012 and was one of three new short-haul routes announced shortly after BA’s parent company, International Airlines Group, bought bmi. The other two routes were Leeds-Bradford and Zagreb.

BA has since launched a service between London City and Rotterdam and will continue to operate this route.

It’s a reasonable assumption that an unsatisfactory commercial performance is a reason for the suspension of the route. According to Civil Aviation Authority statistics, just over 8,000 passengers flew in both directions between London Heathrow and Rotterdam in September 2014, a fall of nearly 30% year on year. August’s numbers show a similar trend.

Affected passengers have the option of being rerouted on either a London Heathrow – Amsterdam flight or London City – Rotterdam flight.
