British Airways Executive Club: BA introduces “status hold” for members taking maternity, paternity and adoption leave

British Airways announced two major changes to its Executive Club frequent flyer programme today.

The first is the introduction of the option for members to put their account “on hold” for up to a year if they take maternity, paternity or adoption leave.

What this means is that if a member has Bronze, Silver or Gold status they do not need to earn the requisite number of tier points (eg 300, 600, or 1,500 tier points) in their membership year in order to renew their status for another year. However, tier points and Avios will still be earned if flights are taken whilst the account is on hold.

This is a benefit immediately available to all Executive Club members worldwide. However, as with all other aspects of the Executive Club, it can be withdrawn at any time.

To qualify, you need to provide a letter from your doctor, a birth certificate or documentation relating to the adoption or paternity leave and email it to baby@ba.com, along with your Executive Club membership name and number.

If you use this benefit, BA will add 1,000 Avios when you enroll your new family member into an Executive Club Household Account.

If this is relevant to you it is also worth checking whether it is offered by any other frequent flyer programmes you are a member of such as Air France KLM Flying Blue.

Back to BA, this benefit is subject to the following notification requirements and terms and conditions, as per the BA website.

1. Members can apply for their status to be extended due to the birth/adoption of a new baby if they are Bronze, Silver or Gold status. Members who have received complimentary status or have Gold or Gold Guest List membership for life are not eligible.

2. In order to qualify, Members will need to provide a letter from their doctor, a birth certificate or documentation relating to the adoption or paternity leave and send it to baby@ba.com.

3. Eligible Members are limited to a maximum of two approved applications within a five year period.

4. Eligible Members can continue to collect Tier Points and Avios and enjoy their tier benefits. Should a Member qualify for a higher Tier during the extension period this will be honoured and the extension on your previous Tier will come to an end.

5. The Member can enrol their child into the Executive Club by creating or adding to an existing household account. 1,000 Avios will be credited to the child’s account should the Member choose to enrol their child within 6 months of the application of the extension. 6. Status Hold is a discretionary benefit. British Airways reserves the right to require any reasonable form of evidence or identification to validate an application and reserves the right to decline the application and to change or withdraw this benefit at any time.
